WE PROVIDE SOCIAL, HEALTH AND WELLBEING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES

YVSS is the first of its kind in southeast QLD, established 3 years ago after identifying the need in our local community to engage with our younger Veterans. Our key focuses are support in social, health & wellbeing, education, and employment opportunities both for themselves and their families.

Rachel Handley, the Young Veterans Support Services Coordinator here at Currumbin RSL is here to support Veterans may they be transitioning, recently discharged, new to the area and adjusting to their new path. Through engaging with Veterans, we re-establish that sense of connection, purpose, drive and opportunity they may not have had or realised was available to them.

We encourage our young veterans

to engage in social and health and wellbeing events either by themselves or with their families.

The demands of military life can make it challenging to adjust back into the civilian world.  We encourage our young veterans to engage in social and health and wellbeing events either by themselves or with their families.  Social engagement has many positive benefits.

Education & Employment

Our Veteran Employment Service provides employment and training opportunities for former Defence Force personnel. We have a great referral network for our local Veterans to get them into meaningful, long-term careers in their local district.

We can assist with providing advice or connection to support in applying for positions, resume writing, interview processes and skills as well as assist and support employers understand the transferability of veteran skills into the workplace, provide resources about hiring Veterans.

SOCIAL CONNECTION

YVSS understand and promote community and social network as being vital for people’s personal support, mental health and being connected to others is important for our mental and physical wellbeing.

YVSS coffee catch ups are held on Mondays at 10am – 11:30am on the deck at Currumbin RSL. This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow veterans and have a yarn. The YVSS will also start doing monthly coffee catchups at a variety of locations. Please keep an eye on our social media or event calendar for updates.

Wellbeing

We strive to deliver a holistic wellbeing approach which is managed and tailored to each individual’s needs.

VETERAN BUSINESS FORUM

One of the new initiatives we introduced is the Veteran Business Forum. Amongst our local community we have some amazing Veteran businesses. Defence force personnel have vast, incredible, and unique experiences, skillsets training and education. Some utilise these skills and take them into civilian life by starting their own business there are others that have incredible knowledge, ideas and plans to start up and run their own business however do not have the understanding or support to help structure to start so these fill fall to the wayside & there are others that may not have considered the option of starting or running their own business due to lack of opportunity education or support to do so.

To support our local Veteran Businesses, we run collaborative workshops that source information, such as mentoring, peer support, networking and connection between services as well as hold targeted workshops on specific business requirements such as grant writing, marketing / promotions, requirements / governance, communication, digital media, legal / contracts / licensing and other key business skills.
