Peter ‘Joli’ Wilson | Waterside Artspace
Peter’s initial interest in photography came from his Grandfather, an amateur filmmaker and photographer. At 14 he helped process the first roll of B&W film shot on a camera given as a present. On this roll of film was a photo of Peter holding his first surfboard: a 9’2″ Gordon Woods. The scene was set! His first published image was Narrabeen’s Col Smith at the 1972 Bells Beach Easter Surfing Contest in the (now defunct) ‘Breakout’ Surfing Magazine.
In the mid-1970s Peter worked as an Assistant Photographer with the Aust Defence Dept. Assistant to a perfectionist German Photographer, he set up the equipment but was forbidden to push the button. 2 years later he shot his first professional frame. Training included studio work, lighting, flash, B&W processing and printing. His mentor advised that photography was for ‘love’ not ‘money’. Many years later he may have been right about the money but Peter still loves what he does!
Peter’s professional career was varied: working at Backdoor Surfing Magazine in Torquay, Head Photographer at Deakin University before joining surf-wear giant Quiksilver as Advertising and Promotions Manager. In 1989 Peter went freelance and with wife Jan, formed Joli Productions. Our business name came from his Grandparent’s surname Jolly; with a French twist to the spelling and translated: ‘Joli’ describes ‘pretty’ and they hoped to make plenty of pretty pictures!
For 40 years Peter has travelled the world capturing oceans, landscapes, sky, beaches, surfing action, cultures and lifestyles. Joli Productions has developed an extensive Stock Library with over half a million transparencies and thousands more digital files.
Peter’s youthful enthusiasm developed into his lifelong passion. ‘Joli’ photos have appeared in hundreds of surfing, outdoor and lifestyle magazines, books, movies, TV and the web worldwide.
He hopes you find them pretty Joli too.
