BLACK RABBIT GEORGE LIVE AT SOUNDLOUNGE
Black Rabbit George is an artist who refuses to allow his creative output to be bound by expectations. His new single Diamond Valley Mushroom, a song he describes as ‘sunset euphoria’ and the second single from his debut album Charles, firmly plants his stylistic innovation in dreamy, ambient pop.
Out 18th October, it’s a quirky, meandering exploration of the 6/4 time signature with a smooth, rolling bass line and layered synths. The track is a major deviation from his previous single—the title track from Charles—which remained true to his folk roots. George’s voice blends seamlessly with the ambient pop sounds, and his obscure lyrical expression was inspired by a memorable weekend in Diamond Valley in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Says George of the his new direction:
‘I had a kind of an existential musical crisis.’ says George. ‘I don’t want to be limited by a particular genre or style just because it’s what’s expected. The reason I make music is for freedom and expression and to tell an interesting story that people will relate to or enjoy. I don’t know where the journey will go from here but I’m enjoying it and I hope my audience does too.’
A five-time finalist at the 2018 Gold Coast Music Awards, Black Rabbit George’s virtuosic musicianship and diverse songwriting ability is winning him a lot of hearts. Known best for his role as the frontman of Tijuana Cartel, he has already made huge stylistic leaps quite seamlessly.
‘I threw everything out the window as far as what I had been doing with Black Rabbit George. Then I could freely draw on all the experience and devices I have learned over the many years i’ve spent creating music. Producing something that sounded like me and had its own original sound seems like the best approach.’
Black Rabbit George will be showcasing his newfound direction as he performs along the East Coast with long-time collaborator and drummer Adam Felton (Ash Grunwald). Commencing with intimate Brisbane venue the Junk Bar, then down to the mid-north coast for shows in Bellingen and Sawtell he will also perform a flagship gig at Gold Coast’s Soundlounge just prior heading north for a final performance on the Sunshine Coast.
