In this latest blog post, Currumbin RSL Journalist Carmen Mudie tells us about accommodation for current and returned service personnel at St George’s Holiday Suites in Coolangatta.
Pot of Gold at Rainbow Bay
Rainbow Bay is renown for its sheltered beach, pristine sand and fresh ocean air but we’ve recently discovered a pot of gold nestled just across the road from the beach.
Leave your metal detector in the garage but keep your curiosity alive because this pot of gold has been changing shape in plain sight in the same location for over 100 years!
Beginning as a humble parcel of land with little more than tents where soldiers were encouraged to seek respite from the traumas of war, it has transformed from tents in 1916 to dormitory style sheds with hot water in 1939 and later in 1954, the red brick ‘St George’s Holiday House’ was built. Major refurbishments continued until 2014 when the old buildings were demolishment and in 2016 ‘The Garland’, St George’s Defence Holiday Suites were completed with 33 luxurious fully self-contained apartments.
The Garland is named after Reverend Canon David John Garland, the ‘architect of ANZAC Day’ services who (among many other achievements) also established a fund known as the Soldiers Church of England Help Society. This fund obtained the land where The Garland stands proudly today complete with a modern gymnasium and sparkling pool where current and ex-servicemen and women can still experience a holiday with a massive discount.
The lovely Chris and Wendy Ward manage The Garland and Chris explains, “Returned and current services personnel and their immediate family can enjoy 30% off rack rate year round with prices starting at just $80 per night for a single room. We have interconnecting rooms available and a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom luxury apartment starts at just $165 per night for a minimum 7 night stay”.
Service Personnel Help Society Inc (SPAHS) operates St George’s Defence Holiday Suites and guests with PTSD can rest assured knowing that Chris and Wendy have been trained to help guests if they require assistance.
So spread the word to your family and friends who have served our country that there’s a pot of gold waiting for them in the shape of luxurious apartments at The Garland in Rainbow Bay. They can relax on a beachfront balcony and take in some vitamin ‘sea’ along with the stunning view or head out to nearby Snapper Rocks for a refreshing surf.
