Think Global, Love Local – Currumbin RSL Goes Green
October 13, 2010
“Think global, love local” is Currumbin RSL’s 2010 motto and throughout the month of November we will showcase what has gone on behind the scenes in 2010 from environmental sustainability changes to promoting local farmers and food producers to working closely with local businesses to bring their members more.
Firstly, Currumbin RSL has been working through several processes to make the Club more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Duty manager and the Club’s Environmental Sustainability Officer, Brian Colwell, has been working tirelessly to reduce the Club’s carbon footprint along with saving the club money.
“We originally targeted the three major energy using areas” said Brian, “air conditioning, hot water and lighting and we got help from a professional company, Energywise, which specialises in energy, water and waste reduction. “We spent around $50,000 on those three areas but are looking at recouping that money within a two year period.”
The whole Club will turn a shade of green with staff showing their enthusiasm by wearing green, car pooling and getting involved in ideas and promotion. If you have any old batteries, printer cartridges or mobile phones we will have recycle bins set up at the Club plus all the prizes and promotions throughout the month will be environmentally friendly in some way – from organic beauty products, recyclable goods and hormone free meat trays to water saving and energy efficient white goods and appliances.
