Two born-and-bred Gold Coast mothers are starting a week-day farmers market in Currumbin to give locals the opportunity to buy fresh seasonal produce direct from local farmers.
The organisers, Hannah Sheppard and Chana Warry-Stokes believe that Southern Gold Coast locals are desperate for a week-day farmers market.
Currumbin Community Markets Organiser Hannah Sheppard said, “So many Gold Coast locals have to travel to our neighbouring towns in the Northern Rivers to buy fresh produce during the week. We thought it was time we had our own community farmers market so that locals could access real food grown locally at a convenient time and place.”
The local women are focused on creating a true farmers market community by only allowing farmers who have a direct link to the produce they sell.
Ms Sheppard explains “The produce must be grown, raised, or caught by the individual farmer or the farmer has a direct link to the produce and can identify exactly where it comes from. We are passionate about creating and nurturing the relationship between the locals and our farmers. Every farmer we have reached out to has been so enthusiastic and supportive. We live such a laid-back lifestyle and we want to celebrate that. We hope for barefoot locals covered in sand who have come straight from the beach to do their groceries, families spending time together before school and having a nutritional breakfast together or just sitting in the sunshine with a coffee and listen to some music. We hope that all people, young and old, stay a while and connect, turning a week-day chore into a ritual they look forward to every week and of course having direct access to fresh and seasonal produce”.
